This is the moment

There is a very clear choice before us.

“We grow great by dreams. All big men are dreamers. They see things in the soft haze of a spring day or in the red fire of a long winter’s evening. Some of us let these great dreams die, but others nourish and protect them; nurse them through bad days till they bring them to the sunshine and light which comes always to those who sincerely hope that their dreams will come true.”

    Woodrow T. Wilson quote.

  2. My Obama Problems: (in no particular order)

    (1) He wants to get out of Iraq but only to get us stuck in the same situation in Afghanistan.

    (2) Nothing new in the Isreal/Palestine position

    (3) Very bad political instinct to give a big “Presidential” campaign speech overseas, especially Berlin. It brings him no new votes and loses votes that were on the fringe. Also speaks of a huge ego.

    (4) No universal health care.

    (5) No threat to the corporate overlords.

    (6) Way to conservative.

    (7) No serious policy proposals.

    (8) Voted to destroy the 4th Amendment.

    (9) Doesn’t believe in Peace.

  3. Funny, those are not problems for me.

    (1) He wants to get out of Iraq so we can make sure the situation in Afghanistan can be dealt with correctly. An Afghanistan surge (with options on Pakistan) deals with terrorism and can be supported by NATO in its new role.

    (2) Your expectations must be greater than mine.

    (3) Voters who paid attention to the overseas trip saw how America could be perceived in the world and how we can project ourselves, after years of damage to our reputation and influence. I’m not talking about those who watch Hannity, O’Reilly, or Olbermann; their minds are made up already.

    (4) See #2. Even if a candidate had a perfect plan (for Mideast peace or universal health care) it would be compromised by everyone else who would have to be involved. My expectations are that Obama would try different approaches and make incremental steps towards solutions in these two areas. Almost anything that is not business as usual would be an improvement.

    (5) Not sure what you are referring to here.

    (6) Not too liberal.

    (7) Proposing to deal with the terrorist threat coming out of Pakistan is pretty serious to me. So is talking to our friends and our foes. It doesn’t sound like much, but it makes sense. NOT talking has led to much of our troubles recently.

    (8) See #2 and #4. I may be wrong about this, but the FISA bill did some good, and a vote against the bill would not have resulted in saving the 4th amendment any more than a vote for it did. Is that accurate?

    (9) And does not believe in the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and Santa Claus. Unlike the current resident of the White House.

But you know what I think about belief. At this time, if Americans need to believe in anything, it should be that a little hope and a lot of hard work could break the cycle of business as usual and help us get through some tough times ahead. Too many Americans think someone else is going to come along and solve their problems. Maybe too many Americans think Obama can solve our problems. Obama will make a fine president. We have to do the rest.

Jumpin with all due respect, whom would you rather? These two candidates, Obama and McCain, are our options not Kucinich or Ron Paul.
Voters, wanted Obama to substantiate himself as internationally strong, I think this was the premise of the visits.
Most Europeans countries want or are pulling out troops form Iraq, we need to continue robust ties that aid not divide us.
Universal health care and corporate overload are understandable serious concerns. Bigger concerns should be, when America is seeking to drill in the Arctic for 90 billion barrels of oil is just plain suicide.
The bigger question was totally overlooked in my view. Why is the increasingly rapid melting of the Arctic sea ice happening, which last September hit a new record summer low? and I’m not spinning an Al Gore ad.
We are in a lull before a huge economic and eviromental storm, there are no bubbles. Whether your an economist or geologist, conclusion should lead to the same end. Business as usual should be to break the circle of dependency from oil, period.
As a nation we need to get back to the basics on all accounts and soul search as to what is really important, and not perpetuate the continued lies of disillusion. And hopefully the “rest” will be history.

Found these two speeches with Reagan and Kennedy, any thoughts on comparisons with Obama?

For some reason, the more I read about this campaign, reflect on the language of its supporters, and view videos such as this one, the more I feel as if I’m witnessing the attempted “birth” of a new religion.

You have bought into the main problem; they are NOT our only two options…you can vote for anyone you want. As long as you except the status quo we will never have better options. I will vote for Dennis this year.

Additionally, voters didn’t want BO to substantiate his international creds, the MSM wanted that. the whole trip was politically foolish, it does not being him any new voters and gives grist to those who wish to attack him, it was a very bad move, I actually think it may have lost him the election.

Drilling ANWAR is not suicidal, it would actually have little environmental impact, we are alrady well screwed in that regard. Although I do not favor drilling it for a different reason; I think of it as our REAL stratregic reserve, when there is little il left I want what IS left to be on US soil. If I have 100 burgers in the freezer and in 5 yaers there will be no more cows, I want to keep those burgers in my freezer (that I bought for 2 dollars a pound) and by every burger everyone else is selling till burgers run out and then I can either eat mine or sell them for a thousand dollars a pound.

The Arctic ice is melting because of global warming, which is enhanced by human activity. I have checked some pretty academic science and it appear to me that is no longer an issue, its a done deal; I am convinced we are past the tipping point for the Arctic.

Yes we are in a lull before huge economic and environmental storms but it does not follow that there are no bubbles. ( Please see my post on oil bubbles here.

Speech comparisons, OK I’ll bite. Can you find any Berlinish speeches made by a CANDIDATE instead of by a sitting PRESIDENT? I don’t think so. At the best its unseemly, at the worst its ego driven and foolish; his handlers should be led out and shot, I would never have allowed this speech (in those settings) and would have probably not have allowed the foreign trip at all. It was a huge mistake, what do you think..somehow you are going to be able to vote twice for him now instead of once? It has gotten him NO VOTES and has increased the resistance of those against him. On a practical level he has used it as an attempt to position himself in the light of real politic and has let him APPEAR far more conservative on Israel/Palestine and Iran issues then is his base. Somebody is telling him that there are crossover votes that he can get by doing this, they are wrong, all he has done is to lose some percentage of votes he already had. VERY BAD POLITICS!

  7. Paul: re 9 points.

    (1) An Afghan surge simply continues to drain our economy and kill lost of people. It does us no long term good. If you want to fight terrorism you must fight the conditions that create terrorists. The first of those conditions is seeing the Great Satan occupying your countrya nd supporting your corrupt leaders inorder to satiate itself on your regional natural resources. Z-biggy had this to say recently:And it’s with a similar perspective that Brzezinski now doubts the that the answer to what ails Afghanistan is more troops. “I think we’re literally running the risk of unintentionally doing what the Russians did. And that, if it happens, would be a tragedy,” Brzezinski told the Huffington Post on Friday. “When we first went into Afghanistan to overthrow the Taliban, we were actually welcomed by an overwhelming majority of Afghans. They did not see us as invaders, as they saw the Soviets.”

However, Brzezinski noted that just as the Soviets were able to delude themselves that they had a loyal army of communist-sympathizers who would transform the country, the U.S.-led forces may now be making similar mistakes. He said that the conduct of military operations “with little regard for civilian casualties” may accelerate the negative trend in local public opinion regarding the West’s role. “It’s just beginning, but it’s significant,” Brzezinski said.

    (2) If your expectations do not include a gresh and fair handed approach to our “ally” Israel then you have very low expectations.

    (3) You think the trip has increased his appeal to “on the fence” voters, I think it has decreased it. Watch Fox, listen to Rush, listen to McSame…. he has totally lost the spin on this trip and that loss was predictable.

    (4) Any health care plan that is not universal and does not remove the private insurance company profit IS, as you say, business as usual. There is no incrementally better…tear it down or don’t pretend!

    (5) No threat to the corporate overlords means corporations will continue to be treated better than people, will continue to have stronger legal rights than mere human citizens, will continue to have better welfare, will continue to have laws written for them that screw the people, will continue to have preferred treatment in our judicial system, etc.

    (6) Very conservative in terms of protecting the status quo. lacking conservativism in its best regards ie. protecting the constitution and individual rights.

    (7) How has he proposed to deal with terrorism and with our “enemies”? Where is the detail? Gosh we are going to be respected by Europe, that will make terrorism go away? No options are off the table with Iran, gee thats a change!

    (8) NO NOT AT ALL ACCURATE. The bill in NO WAY increased our security (and if you take an unbiased look at data overload it actually makes it likely we are less safe) and yes the 4th is GONE. You no longer have any practical right to privacy. I am so sick of sending out info to people that i am in bed with politically who do not care about this issue. Peak oil, if it exists, is an issue about our physical comfort, it is a very selfishness driven issue for most people. At the very least it is MATERIALISTIC. Our constitution is a philosophical issue. To oppose the FISA abortion requires people to at least consider sacrifice for our PHILOSOPHICAL way of life, to consider doing something about oil simply requires people to do something about their finanacial/social comfort. One calls for sacrifice to a principal, the other a quick fix for materialistic comfort.

    (9) You equate the concept of PEACE with the tooth fairy. Why is that? In your personal life have you ever chosen violence over negotiation/retreat? If you did, did it work? Why do you think countries are different than people? Because you have bought into the status quo, you are not even seeing the box, let alone thinking out of it. What about a Department of Peace? What about a group of true pacifists with say a tenth of the Pentagon budget? What might that create? Sadly because you have bought the propaganda you will never get to know the answer to that question.

Obama will make an ordinary President, if he is elected which is VERY doubtful. Whoever is elected will not serve a second term, they inherit a disaster and neither candidate has shown any real leadership qualities, ie the belief taht radical change is needed and the ability to cause that change, the sad thing is that BO at least appears to have the ability to lead that type of change but has no desire to do so. The country was ready for radical change, thats who all the newly registered voters are. Everyone is predicting record turnout, I think that becomes more and more unlikely as BO continues to move to the right. He is getting very bad advice, perhaps from himself.

Funny how people look at the same things but draw different conclusions. This is what makes life so interesting. Being able to express these different thoughts and have the freedom of choice is what makes the United States so great.
I think it was a brilliant move for BO to go to Europe and in fact is probably the deciding factor in securing my vote. He may be the only person to repair the global rift we have wrought and he is proving he is willing to do that.
Look at the crowds he draws wherever he goes. Those are Americans there in Germany listening to him also. How great for him to not just be concerned with campaigning in the states but to be looking forward in inspiring the world to join hands in defeating global problems. Not ego…vision.
Yes Archangelo, I have thought the same thing. It is a little unnerving but maybe what we need is a good leap of faith.

I was wondering where Obama got the idea that “They’re going to try to say ‘well, you know, he’s got a funny name’ and ‘he doesn’t look like all the presidents on the dollar bills and the five-dollar bills.’”

Then I remembered this video: “I know that I don’t look like previous Americans who have spoken in this great city.”

Interesting. Is it possible he got the idea from himself?

  10. Arch: he’s not getting those ideas from himself, its what the Rovians McSame hired a month ago are actually doing and doing well.

Rove described this playbook in a memo that got leaked:
Karl Rove’s latest to Republicans about how to message on Obama …
“Even if you never met him, you know this guy. He’s the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by.”

Now what do you think Rovians think this picture conjures, could it be a black man with a white woman? Methinks so!

Even if you don’t buy that association the intention is clear “that guy in the country club” hes not one of “us”. he is the OTHER.

And then there are these from Rove’s op ed in the WSJ; He is often lazy, given to misstatements and exaggerations and, when he doesn’t know the answer, too ready to try to bluff his way through. Ask a black man what he thinks about that statement and what he thinks it means to white
    Americans.

Actually you don’t have to, just read Bob Herbert’s recent op ed “RUNNING WHILE BLACK” here. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/02/opinion/02herbert.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
