The World is Getting Bigger Again

The Republic of the Marshall Islands became an independent nation in 1986. Located roughly halfway between Hawaii and Australia, these 29 atolls and five single islands total about 181 square kilometers of land area and have a population of 63,174.

The government has declared a state of economic emergency. President Litokwa Tomeing said that the country has enough diesel to keep the power generators running until the end of August. The country simply does not have the money to pay for more diesel shipments.

Small nations like the Marshall Islands are not the only places experiencing the energy crisis worse than we are here in Connecticut. Hawaii is running out of time, too. Hawaii Energy Options is a blog that focuses on Hawaii’s crisis and possible solutions, including wind, solar, and OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion).

I’ve never been to Hawaii, always thought I’d get there some day. Now, I’m not so sure I’ll ever get to go.

Two airlines that ferried hundreds of thousands of tourists to Hawaii each year have stopped operations. Passenger arrivals in April were 11.3 percent lower than a year earlier and are projected to be 3 percent lower this year. Hotel bookings were down in March and are expected to nosedive in April and May.

Two of the three major passenger liners that cruised the islands have pulled out.

Energy Bulletin is one of my fav sites. The articles can be informative. Some, on occasion can be funny. This post did both: http://www.energybulletin.net/node/45926

The other night I had a great idea about hosting a “Peak Oil Party”
Yep crazy but true. I had planned on enlightening my friends with the documentary The End Of Suburbia and having organic hors d’oeuvres and of course drinks. Well, how should I put this delicately……my friends think I’ve lost the plot and family are under the impression I’ve been watching too many Lost episodes.
What did conspire was, direct from the man of Margaritaville himself, Jimmy Buffett. His margarita maker arrived and of course ALL his music supplied with alchohol and mix.
Everyone agreed I needed Jimmy. I was never a fan but now…
Jimmy Buffett is my best mate.
If I’m going to live in a hut somewhere due to peak oil, there had better be Jimmy and his margarita maker! Just one outlet that’s all I ask, ok and some batteries.

    Holy dung!
What am I doing reading this when I’m on vacation!? Not enough Margueritas to keep my mind off the woes of the world. Best to go straight to the Tequilla and to hell with the mix.

  3. I’ve been meaning to ask this; does anyone else find that comments here take forever to load? Often is seems to be google that is slowing it down but not always.

  4. Second time it was a bit quicker but still slowish and it definately seems to be google syndication at fault, I think I have noticed this at other sites as well. Is google’s ad program slowing down a lot of the web? I think so!
